    Opinions on ESPN

Yes, Junction Boys (whatever happened to Jim Dent, by the way) was excellent, and I'd put Bronx Burning high on the list of ESPN accomplishments. As for how I'd change ESPN and what I like least, I recently came across a column that says it bets...

    Worst lede ever

A column on who should be the next Cowboys coach begins, "It makes so much sense, it's almost scary." Is this the ESPN effect? Or maybe the ESPN affectation, where sportswriters think they have to sound like adolescents. Not very bright adolescents at that.

    Cowlishaw's split deal?

I heard Cowlishaw threatened to sue when they didn't offer him the buyout, and the DMN, in turn, gave him a bonus and a raise. But this says a great deal about the DMN, whose management, of course, has a reputation for being mercenary, anal-retentive and unprincipled. If Cowlishaw, who can't...

    Far from Trite

Maybe you've come upon something there. Maybe some columnists don't know what "entertain" means. But I think Gene understands that to entertain is to amuse and hold interest.

    Far from Trite

I loved it. A column should inform, entertain and provoke, and this did all three. Most columns I've read lately are so moronic they can't even meet one of the objectives. How refreshing to read a columnist that can both write and think.

Contests: Why should I enter them?

Smallpotatoes, you’ll get yours, if you want them. Every reporter, editor and columnist who stays in the game gets awards. The question you rightly ask is whether you should want them, whether you should bother with them. I used to think awards were like hors d’oeuvres passed around at a...

    Worst lede ever

Jim Reeves of the FW Star-Telegram began a recent column with this confession: "I am not God." Well, now that we've cleared that up ....

Let's try this again: Candidates and their qualifications...

The American economy depends on injustice. Injustice is essential to its working. Imagine some lazy college student (choose whatever sex and race you want) whose alarm clock goes off and he/she wonders if it's all worth it. I'm not especially talented, gifted, smart or industrious, and I really...

Woody Paige back to Denver Post

As for Skippy, he has no credibility either. The guy can make words dance. But he lost all credibility when he cowered outside the interview room, listening with an ear to the door, rather than go inside and confront Tom Watson. Skippy had just written a column blasting Watson as a choke...

Woody Paige back to Denver Post

Woody has contributed to the impression that sportswriters are ranting idiots, if not state-of-the-art wackos. And with his persistent shtick, he has lost journalistic credibility.

    Bob Mong on Dallas Radio

Nice irony here: While Mong was on the radio telling the world how the DMN was still a great newspaper despite firing and losing many, if not most, of its best folks, the Star-Telegram was getting the scoop on the Rangers firing Buck.

    Another columnist who can't write

Hypo: So any criticism you don't like you dismiss as personal animosity? That's rather childish, don't you think? Why do you have to make it personal? Is it because you're self-absorbed and you assume everyone else is, too? As for my relationship with Taylor, I have none. He has beaten me on no...

    Another columnist who can't write

Yes, yes, to fault a column for a single usage problem is petty, and, yes, we all make mistakes. But Taylor's lie-lay error is only indicative of a larger problem: The guy can't write. For years the DMN assumed its desk was so strong it could take anybody's drivel and transform it into a column...
