I remember when phones were first a "thing" and people started using them while other people were around and I thought "what the person on the phone is more important than those of us right in front of you??" Yep, that's when I started to think we were doomed.

I remember the first time I saw a guy scan his phone as a boarding pass at an airline gate and thinking "well look at this highfalutin' jackass!" I've certainly done it but am still quite happy to get a paper pass as phones in airports aren't a guaranteed breeze, at least to me.

We went to a Broadway show tonight. A woman sitting next to us was CONSTANTLY checking her Apple Watch and texting.

She wasn’t a teen or in her 20s. Mid-to-late 30s at least. And a ****ing asshole.

JFC. You’re at the theater, with other people, and right in front of you is incredible music, entertainment, talented actors and something unique that not many are fortunate enough to experience.

And you can’t put your phone down for five ******* minutes. You’re not that ****ing important or special.

This **** is way more addictive than drugs and booze for some people.

Screen-shot your boarding passes (and other vital docs/receipts/etc.), then save them to your photo files.

You'll then always have backup copies that don't need live WiFi. I stash all mine in a file called DOCS for quick access.

Last thing I want to be doing at the airport or at a concert or sporting event or whatever is finding a paper copy of things. I actually like the phone for that, keeps everything handy in one place. Though if you check in early for a flight and then check a bag at the airport, they give you the paper pass anyway, so it's a wash.

I give phone walkers a good shoulder check and tell them to pay attention to where they’re walking. Absolutely infuriating.

If I'm walking on campus - and always on the right-hand side of the sidewalk like a civilized person - and a student engrossed in her/his phone is walking straight toward me, I just stop. No one has run into me yet, but they've come damn close, looking up when they're a couple of feet away.

Well, there was a period where everything I tried to buy at the Publix across the street from my work with my debit card was initally declined, and I got a text asking if it was me who shelled out the $5.79 for a package of Laffy Taffy. So I had to click that yes, it was me, before trying again.

So anyone looking at me going through that ritual probably thought I was one of those people who couldn't tear himself away from his screen.

If I use Apple Pay at the big gas station at my exit, the transaction goes through but then my credit union freezes my debit card until I click on the app to tell them that yes it was a legitimate purchase. Every time.

I’m also none too fond of the notion that I need to call them every time I’m headed out of state and play Mother May I to have access to my own money. I get why they do it and I’m no Q-Anon conspiracy freak but that still doesn’t set right with me. We are still a free country for the moment.

Walking outside the Peabody Hotel in Memphis six years ago after a Redbirds game, I told Gwen, "There are so many people not looking up from their phones, I am going to let someone run into me and fall backwards like I was taking a charge."

No more than 30 seconds later, got bumped and sold it like a Premier League injury. Scared the poor girl silly but suddenly everybody reacted and once I pronounced myself fine, I saw a major change in behavior, at least temporarily.

The other side of the coin - I got a call from my credit union's card watch service over the Thanksgiving weekend. I had unusual charges, could I confirm them?

There was $1400 dollars in two charges from some company in Harlem I knew nothing about. My card got locked down till Monday when I had a new one issued, but I didn't wind up out the fourteen hundred. If it had gone through at least some of my end of month autopays would have bounced.

The way I learned about Nollywood movies was when my credit union called this spring asking if I had signed up for a streaming service for them. I had not so they locked my card until I could come in for a replacement. No funds lost.
