The bun maker and his assistants then give a demonstration on how the product is made.

Squares of cardboard picked from the ground are first soaked to a pulp in a plastic basin of caustic soda – a chemical base commonly used in manufacturing paper and soap – then chopped into tiny morsels with a cleaver. Fatty pork and powdered seasoning are stirred in.

 

High in fiber, good for regularity.

 

I'm pretty sure my middle school cafeteria served that meal at least once a month.

 

I'd be willing to bet the Chinese aren't alone in this practice...

 

The fact that this is on the same board as the Bai Ling thread, on the same day, is brilliant.

 

At least the fatty pork is nutritious.

 

It is almost a given that I've probably eaten at a restaurant that did this. I wish that wasn't so, but it probably is.

 

Ah, no wonder you feel like you've eaten nothing after eating Chinese! You really haven't!

For som reason I cannot recall, my friends and I were just discussing hard tack a couple of days ago.
