Caught it on the @BreakingNews feed on Twitter, happened about 40 minutes ago:
@BreakingNews BULLETIN -- MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES OFF AMERICAN SAMOA.

@BreakingNews BULLETIN -- TSUNAMI WARNING ISSUED FOR AMERICAN SAMOA, SAMOA, NIEU, WALLIS-FUTUNA.
No link yet. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2009mdbi.php

    Location on Google Map: http://tinyurl.com/yckujjr

Tsunami warnings also issued for Hawaii and New Zealand.

Update: @BreakingNews reports that earthquake magnitude has been bumped to 8.3. Three-meter tsunami hit American Samoa.

Re: 7.9 earthquake off American Samoa

Damn. I get text alerts from USGS any time there's an earthquake over 5.0 anywhere in the world. Saw this one was 200+ km away from Samoa, and didn't think anything of it. Big ones hit in the middle of the ocean all the time.

Hope those islands don't get the brunt of it. Thought for sure this rupture would be too far away.

Update: USGS has it back at 8.0 now.

Anyone know what determines whether a tsunami forms or doesn't form from an undersea earthquake?
It seems like any displacement would cause one to some extent.

Heard on the BBC that Samoa got hit very hard by the tsunami. There's a tsunami warning for all of New Zealand too.

Tried looking for newspaper web sites from the islands, but there doesn't seem to be any that update regularly. Also, no significant TV or radio news web sites either.

Fourteen dead in the American Samoa tsunami, reports AP, which adds that an unspecified number of people were killed in neighboring Samoa. Water reached points up to a mile inland in American Samoa.
