How in the hell do you drive in 171 while drawing 145 walks? That's insane.

When you've got the immortal Wally Pipp and Aaron Ward hitting behind you most of the season.

That team had no business winning the pennant. But the rest of the league was pretty awful, outside of Cleveland. Chicago, umm, would have ordinarily been a contender ... ;)

That said, Ruth's 1927 season gets all the hype, but his 1921 was the best anyone has ever had. In addition to .378-59-171, there's also 44 doubles and a career-high 16 triples (Lance Johnson, eat your heart out!) -- 457 total bases, more than anyone else in the history of the game.

You know, Buck, I kind of lean toward 1921, too, but I've seen a lot of baseball folks say Ruth's 1920 season was actually the best, at least in terms of rate stats:

.376/.533/.849, with 54 homers and 137 RBI, in "only" 457 at-bats. His OPS-plus was 256, the highest of his career (meaning his OPS — 1.382 by the way — was 256 percent better than the league average).

Not sure why Ruth played in only 142 games that year. Maybe too many hot dogs and root beers. [/1920s euphemism for syphillis]
