I think this song is about the death of a loved one, but it was poplular at a time when I was going through the breakup that seems to have defined the last 5 years of my life, one way or another

I miss the look of surrender in your eyes
The way your soft brown hair would fall
I miss the power of your kiss when we made love
Oh, but baby, most of all
I miss my friend

The one my heart and soul confided in
The one I felt the safest with
The one who knew just what to say
To make me laugh again
And let the light back in
I miss my friend

I miss the colors that you brought into my life
Your golden smile, those blue-green eyes
And I miss your gentle voice
In lonely times like now
Sayin' it'll be alright
I miss my friend

I miss those times
I miss those nights
I even miss our silly fights
The makin' up
The mornin' talks
And those late afternoon walks
I miss my friend

I miss my friend
I miss my friend
I miss my friend

It was a ruby that she wore
On a chain around her neck
In the shape of a heart
In the shape of a heart
It was a time I wont forget
For the sorrow and regret
And the shape of a heart
And the shape of a heart
I guess I never knew
What she was talking about
I guess I never knew
What she was living without

People speak of love dont know what theyre thinking of
Wait around for the one who fits just like a glove
Speak in terms of belief and belonging
Try to fit some name to their longing
People speak of love

There was a hole left in the wall
From some ancient fight
About the size of a fist
Or something thrown that had missed
And there were other holes as well
In the house where our nights fell
Far too many to repair
In the time that we were there

People speak of love dont know what they're thinking of
Reach out to each other though the push and shove
Speak in terms of a life and the learning
Try to think of a word for the burning

You keep it up
You try so hard
To keep a life from coming apart
And never know
What breaches and faults are concealed
In the shape of a heart

It was the ruby that she wore
On a stand beside the bed
In the hour before dawn
When I knew she was gone
And I held it in my hand
For a little while
And dropped it into the wall
Let it go, heard it fall

I guess I never knew
What she was talking about
I guess I never knew
What she was living without
People speak of love dont know what theyre thinking of
Wait around for the one who fits just like a glove
Speak in terms of a life and the living
Try to find the word for forgiving

You keep it up
You try so hard
To keep a life from coming apart
And never know
The shallows and the unseen reefs
That are there from the start
In the shape of a heart

Had a roommate in college who was spurned and put the Eagles' Take It To The Limit on repeat.

At first, I was cool with it. But after like, four hours, of hearing Randy Meisner's high-pitched yearning and my roomie's self-pity, I was ready to go all Big Lebowski on him.

And I like Take It To The Limit. To this day, I can't help but think of that moment when I hear the song.

Bruce's Springsteen's I Wish I Were Blind
Which contains the verse:

We struggle here but all our love's in vain
And these eyes that once filled me with your beauty
Now fill me with pain
And the light that once entered here
Is banished from me
And this darkness is all baby that my heart sees

The first song I thought of was "For No One" by the Beatles:

The day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you

She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her when she said her love is dead
You think she needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone
She doesn't need him

The day breaks, your mind aches
There will be times when all the things she says will fill your head
You won't forget her

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

John Lee Hooker's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer."

10. Landed - yet another Ben Folds song.

Personally, I always preferred Rage Against the Machine and other heavy stuff during breakups.

I had "Lining Your Pockets" by Ocean Color Scene on during one phone breakup, so I always think of it when I think of breakup songs.

Same with "The Sea and the Rhythm" by Iron & Wine.

And UT, I worked in a dry cleaners for a year. I still have scars from the shirt press. I've also castrated pigs, chased raccoons out of lumber piles, picked cucumbers, sold underground sprinkler systems door-to-door, bussed tables at a Red Lobster, and dressed up as Boomer, the Parks Canada mascot (a giant beaver, by the way).

I don't do anything like that anymore, and hopefully I never will. But I'm glad I did, so that I know how good I have it now.

Now go play air guitar to "Fall Behind Me" by the Donnas.

Air guitar fixes all welts.
