If I get to chop your finger off for a notoriously bad typo, I'll call it even. ;)

"The East Bumblefuck Beavers needed a win to keep its conference title hopes alive.
    Mission accomplished."

I want to throttle my guys when they drop something like that one me.

    My all-time favorite...

Podunk exploded for 24 points in the first quarter and never looked back...

    Like nails on chalkboards.

With state title games coming up, here's one I hate:

"The team celebrated, as 'We are the Champions' blared over the loudspeaker..."

Please, no headlines about teams that "state their case," either. Ugh.

Actually used that one once, but it kind of worked.
Early December basketball game, and a kid with the last name Christmas scored 10 or 12 points in the first half. His team won.
Admittedly, I was younger and more naive back then. I didn't have the guiding light of SportsJournalists.com's collective wisdom to guide me. But I still think it was one of the few times a cliche could actually be used successfully.

Not a lede, but a headline I saw from a late 60s sports section in our archives was just awful:

    "Temple unleashes spooks on Greenville"

It was from a football game where Temple won late, so they "spooked" Greenville somehow. Bad enough to use the cliche. Even worse, it was two all-black schools playing

If I cover a title game where that ISN'T blared over the loudspeaker, I'm putting it in my story and thanking the league.
