    Yaz hospitalized

I'm not even a Sox fan, but it would suck if this takes a more serious turn...

    Re: Yaz hospitalized

I remember approaching Yaz as a very young reporter in the Red Sox clubhouse back in 1979. His response? "I don't have time for fucking questions."

    Get well, Yaz.

Saw that on TV earlier when I was eating lunch with my dad at Jerry's.

    Hope Yaz is OK...

What can we say? He recognized a Republican when he saw one. :D :D :D :D

I've heard tales like that before, but as a guy whose roots are almost entirely based in New England and Long Island, I've always had a fondness for Yaz. It's been a rough go for him for the last few years so I hope he's OK.

And I really respect his legitimate Greta Garbo act...unlike so many of the doth-protest-too-much athletes who beg off celebrity with one hand and invite the camers with the other, Yaz really just wants to be anonymous. He's one of a handful of people who can vie for the title of Best Living Ballplayer but it's amazing how rarely he shows up to Fenway or the HOF.

I know his daughter and one of his grandsons. I hope he recovers.

He grew up on a potato farm in Long Island, right?

What is it now, a shopping mall or a townhome complex?

He grew up so far out east--Southampton or Bridgehampton, I think--that it's probably still a farm. The Island has a well-earned rep as strip mall central, but there's still plenty of farmland on the extreme east end.

If I had wifi access, I woulda won the race. Damned AT&T Edge network. :)
    Apologies.

  12. byh is right...the guy is the last triple-crown winner, and his name recognition with those under 30 is almost at zero. 18-time all-star? the guy always seemed very genuine, and he always had a youthful vibe to him, too. godspeed.
