Yao Ming out for the season

    Only counter-example I can think of is Ilgauskas. He appears to have gotten past whatever foot troubles he had.

    But I agree that usually the problems are chronic.

    Good point on Illgauskas. He had horrible problems for a 2-3 year stretch, but he's barely missed any time over the past 4-5 years. He's been in nearly every game and even the ones he's missed haven't been b/c of foot problems.
    But Z could be the exception to the rule with big guys.

    That's true, I guess Illgauskas did make a nice comeback from it. Maybe medical treatment has improved.

    It does seem that NBA centers are particularly susceptible to foot stress fractures (makes sense, running 2 hrs a night carrying 7 ft 260 plus pounds) and usually they're never quite the same afterward. Kevin McHale and Jeff Ruland are 2 others I can think of that were all-pros until stress fractures, but never again afterward. We'll see how Yao does.
