Who of these two choices is the worst free agent signing?

  1. Mike Hampton, 2001 (Colorado - $121 million, eight years)

Mike Jackson has an issue with that one.

    Blue Jays division:

Ken Dayley, 10 games over three seasons (two actually, since he missed one). Yeah, I know he had vertigo but he was signed for almost $2 million per, a pretty good wage back in the day.

Ed Whitson. 15-10 record in a year and a half with the Yankees, which sounds nice, but he's famous for two more things.

    1. Being afraid to pitch in New York.

    2. Punching out Billy Martin.

    My apologies for semi-plagarism, Jayson.

so is Wayne Barker the guy who signed a million-dollar deal with the Indians and then threw a perfect game in 1981? :D

I'm not sure how anyone can think Zito is a bigger bust than Hampton.

First of all, it's only one year and one month in. Granted, Zito is likely to redefine the suck for the next five years and five months, but I bet he pitches for SOMEONE each of those seasons.

In terms of dollars and years, Hampton is the biggest bust of all-time. He's spent nearly half his contract on the DL. He was dumped on the Braves after two years in Colorado, home of great school systems. And he was barely adequate for his two healthy years in Atlanta.

All that said, Joe Rossi is right on: Russ Ortiz, who got $33 million for five wins, is the worst FA pitcher ever. Here's an interesting take on it from Keith Law, JP Ricciardi's favorite writer:

Note the sentence where I said "It's not his fault he gets paid"

He might as well be holding a gun because it's armed robbery that he's committing.
