Uhh, how 'bout MediaNews? Hope Dean Singleton doesn't do to the Mercury News and Contra Costa Times what he did to the Oakland Tribune. But, sadly, I don't count him out either.

Donrey (DonRey?). Based on my hometown paper, nothing but grip-n-grins. No pretense of being about anything but the bottom line.

Paxton should be included in this poll as well.

    I assumed Patton meant Paxton.

Despite the criticism on this site -- including plenty from me -- Gannett is not the worst.

Their particular sin, though, is buying and fouling up some good large newspapers.

Des Moines and Louisville come to mind, first and foremost.

Donrey does suck...and the thing with them is they have the daily newspaper in Las Vegas. I mean, they could break all kinds of news and rake in all kinds of money. There is no reason why that shouldn't be a major, major newspaper. What they're doing is like buying a $4 million house, then not mowing the grass and putting a Camero up on blocks in the front yard.
But based on the comments on this board, I don't think they're the worst.

  10. Not a paper chain, but it deserves a mention.

In fact, Gannett is one of the companies I've worked for, and it's not even close to the worst.

    Not even close.

If you voted that way, you're simply underinformed. Not even close.

If you're lucky, you'll never find out.

I put in 13 good years -- and two shitty weeks -- with Gannett, the only chain of national significance I have worked for. I voted for Boone, just based on stories I have heard from people I know and trust. Seems like JRC should be the winner, based on what has been said on the site in the past.
