I remember reading something years ago where Franco Harris happened to be at Three Rivers Stadium for a function and saw they were replacing the turf. He went down there, and saw it exactly as you described it. A thin carpet on top of pavement. That had to really suck for the players.

If you grow up in certain parts of the country, ie the PNW, turf is omnipresent. Every high school/college has it. It's the only way you can play for 12 months of the year outside because grass fields get destroyed from November through April.

So, if Switzerland and Cameroon don't tie this afternoon, the US can do no worse than be the 4th ranked 3rd place team and therefore advance even before they kick off tonight. Of course, we want to win the group and likely would qualify even with a tie in that game unless there are some strange results.

Wambach nice goal, pretty big momentum swing. USA dominated play but was seconds from going into the half tied.

USWNT had so many poor passes tonight. Could have been 5-0 with better quality touches.

Would have been 3-0 if they had called the handball and not negated the goal that was onsides.

Germany with a crazy good first half against Sweden. They are tough to beat.

If the U.S. can get that far, it'll be a tough semifinal matchup.

We look a step slow - again - here in the early going against Colombia.

ETA: I missed Heath's early opportunity.

USA playing super nervous again. Nothing through the middle.
