I'd rather hear a well thought out response from Kerr or Pop than something from the hot take artists who will move on from China to, say, what will the Browns do next or the righties who just want to pwn the libruls.

Adam Silver's latest statement--will be interesting how this goes over:

    Good piece here:

The raging controversy over the NBA, China, and the Hong Kong protests, explained

It probably is a race, to some degree, to find out whether the Chinese people are exposed to enough aspects of American culture to stand up to their government, or whether American citizens are normalized enough to China's dictatorship - and tethered enough to China's consumers - to accept it as an OK form of government, so long as it's not ours.

And Az is right, in essence, by saying few companies are clean in this. That's true. And there's an argument to be made that, in the long run American values win out. But they may not, too.

    It's an OK statement.

The problem is the NBA adjudicated in North Carolina over some bathrooms. Not gonna adjudicate in China. Nope. Huh-uh. But in Charlotte? Well, sure!

    The statement from 2016:

“Our week-long schedule of All-Star events and activities is intended to be a global celebration of basketball, our league, and the values for which we stand, and to bring together all members of the NBA community — current and former players, league and team officials, business partners, and fans. While we recognize that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by HB2.”

In other words, conservatives on social policy need to be punished. Communists do not.

It's a clear double standard. It's very hard to walk back from without conceding, after the fact, the NBA shouldn't have so directly waded into a political issue there. If the NBA couldn't host its festivities in Charlotte over HB2 how is the climate of ongoing human rights abuses in China palatable to the NBA staging games there?

I've never found Pop all that thoughtful, to be honest, on the subject of politics. But I concede I don't care for people who, half the time, think reporters are about as worthy as the gum on their shoe.

. . . the progressive cause of the moment and do absolutely nothing to uphold fundamental progressive values when doing so requires any sacrifice.

The NBA is full of shit. Always has been always will be. Same as the NFL, the WWE, Disney and just about every other money making enterprise on the planet.

They set themselves up for this kinda thing by parading around telling everyone “we’re not full of shit, nope not us, those other guys yes, not us.”

Their attitude invites being dunked on when it inevitably comes out that they’re indeed full of shit.

    He’s a company?

Somebody could tell Nike but I do believe Nike still outfits the NFL - and Kaepernick! Sweet deal, that.
