Are they allowed to use scissors at school?

45 days is way, way too long.

But, this isn't just a fork and spoon. It does have a sharp knife blade.

I'm not sure parents should encourage/allow a first grader to carry something like that to school.

But, given the intent of the student. I'm sure that just taking the knife away and requiring a parent to come retrieve it probably would have prevented any injury and discouraged a repeat.

A kid came to the school in which my wife teaches with a shotgun shell in his coat pocket. He'd been hunting with his father and forgot it was there. The office kept it until his mom could pick it up. It is a private school.

Adults carrying box cutters and 6-year-olds with camp cutlery are one and the same? You've got to be kidding me.

Under dumbass lawmakers who lack the common sense to be more specific, yes.

Outside of zero tolerance, you're relying on someone to draw the line somewhere.

No, you have categories depending on the weapon and the age of the person. Under a one-size fits all which isn't the same as zero tolerance, you're hanging a 6-year-old.

Ah, because all 11-year-olds are the same, right?

What if the knife brought by the 6-year-old gets into the hands of the trouble-making 11-year-old?

I agree. But zero tolerance is all the rage. This is what happens when people think it's all black and white.
