Why all the over-the-top mourning for President Ford?

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by TigerVols, Dec 29, 2006.

  1. Actually, it's not.
It would have been better if Ford had thrown his opinion out there while he was alive. It is still good -- if only as one more nail in the coffin -- to have them now. Bennett's objection is not when these opinions were expressed, but that they were expressed at all. Does that mean that I think Bennett is prima facie an insincere blowhard? Yes.
I decline to look at Henry Kissinger with anythine less than utter derision. I notice that the fact that he and Kissinger gave the go-ahead for the genocidal campaign in East Timor has sort of vanished down the memory hole. The guy should be eating off a tin tray in Spandau.

I see your point, and we'll agree to disagree.

But I said Bennett was the self-proclaimed arbiter of all things moral, and with book titles like The Moral Compass, The Death of Outrage, and The Book of Virtues, you'd be hard-pressed to argue.

He must, then, be held to a higher standard than another person paid for their commentary who has not grown rich lecturing the public on their behavior, correct?

Just don't go the casinos with Bennett. He'll take your house, your wife, and your moral virtues if you bet against him. ;)

Doug Brinkley was on Imus this AM and discussed an interview that he did with President Ford that completely contradicted Woodward interview. Brinkley said that Ford was not against getting rid of Saddam and also did not tell him to wait until his death to publish story.

Apologies for quoting myself, but the following post appeared toward the end a Gerald Ford RIP thread that had run its course by the time I chimed in, so I doubt if it was seen by more than a couple of people. Thanks, Fenian, for bringing up the Indonesia issue, because it bears mention.

I don't hate Ford, but after listening to all the glowing eulogies today, I was a little bothered. Our government's behavior during the events in question still haunt us today, as Indonesia is menaced by the presence of jihadist yahoos who have plenty of fodder to fuel anti-Western sentiment thanks to our disgraceful conduct with regard to the Suharto regime.
