Your friends don't speak for my experience as a teenager during that time. The racial component of the Lakers and celtics only added to the intrigue around that rivalry. And lets not act like it was some uncommon occurance. It was a major component in that rivalry, especially to African Americans and their perception of the city of Boston. dismiss it if you want to, but it was there and it was very real.

It only added to the mystique of the rivalry. So rather than make you and your friends out to be the standard, understand that it DID play a role and made the rivalry in the 80's so unique.

I may be dumb too, but I never looked at the rivalry in terms of race either.

I didn't really look at it in those terms, but I was surrounded by people who did. Part of going to high school in the racially-charged deep south, I suppose.
