    There's always the "baseball's appeal is regional" thing too. In Northern California, for example, Posey and Bumgarner have car endorsement deals. Don't know how national those spots go.

    True. But when baseball stars were the most popular national athletes the way most people learned about a game was probably in a newspaper. So the focus was on the statistical achievements of players.
