No wasted strokes in this story.

Jones has been on an absolute tear this year. It seems like every time I'm reading something in Esquire that I think is great, I look at the byline and it's usually his...

You don't look at bylines before you read stories? I'm the complete opposite.

Not only do I read bylines, but in The New Yorker, I read the little writer bio before beginning the piece. Even for writers I know (combination of habit and to see if they have any books coming out, etc., etc.).

I know real estate is valuable, but I wish every magazine did the same.

Some years ago, I did a story on racer Hermie Sadler and his daughter, who is autistic. Decent story, ran A1 on Mother's Day.

That night, my wife came up to me and asked if I'd seen the story on the front page? Described it in detail. Said she really liked it.

"You serious? Did you look at the story? I wrote it."

Her response: "Oh. Glad I didn't notice that first. I probably wouldn't have read it."

Meant to mention this Fiona Apple piece from New York Magazine when I started this thread.

Someone else sent that to me. I'm not ashamed to admit I don't get it. I thought it was hacky and navel-gazing and told me nothing I didn't already know ... and I'm not exactly an Apple fan.

It's a really powerful intimate piece.

It struck no chord with me. It was all "Look at Fiona Apple! She was Zooey Deschanel before Zooey ever thought of being flighty and weird!" It dragged on too long.

And dreu, your opinion is tainted by your Fiona love. :p

And so that I can prove (to myself if no one else) that it's not an anti-first-person thing, here's Chris Heath in GQ on Michelle Williams, and I adored every bit of this.
