The rules being the rules - I wouldn't be surprised if that is taught. If he slides, he's down anyway and you avoid the 15 yards. If he doesn't you get the guy.

This is Example A of what's wrong with the NFL when it comes to safety. There's no attempt to tackle here. It's a helmet-first launch of the body, and it happens on almost every play. If the players would tackle correctly, we wouldn't see the kind of injuries we're seeing right now. But watch any game and you'll see players constantly launching themselves to knock down ball carriers. There's very little tackling. But I also believe that this needs to start at younger levels. The NFL is full of players who are supreme athletes and have gotten by on their athleticism forever. They never learned to tackle because they didn't have to. They relied on being faster, stronger, quicker and more agile than their fellow high school and college players. So they dive around the field head first trying to knock someone down, rather than wrap up and do it right.

As for this play, the NFL needs to fine Timmons. That's a fraction of a second from being the end of Flynn's game, career, life. If he actually made contact, it would have been 15 yards, probably fine, possible suspension. But because he missed, the game and life goes on as norma. If the NFL really wants to get rid of this garbage, it needs to focus on the near misses, too. Some of those, like this one, are actually worse than some of the penalized plays that occur.

You want to fine a guy for a play on which he made no contact at all? One on which he could claim that part of the reason he dove was to avoid hitting Flynn after he slid? Comical.

I always lower my head and shoulder when trying to avoid someone.

Hey, the NFL wants these guys to go low. Timmons was ready to go low.

At no time has the NFL asked defenders to go low on sliding quarterbacks. But you know this. You're just too in the tank for the Steelers to admit this was a classless attempt to injure the opposing QB.

The NFL rules are forcing players to go low. Anybody with a clue realizes that.

At that point in the play, Flynn is a runner, not a quarterback. He doesn't get the same protection that a quarterback in the pocket does. Also something anybody with a clue about football should know.

And I have been heavily critical of many Steelers over the years. I have ripped Ryan Clark for being dirty and said that he is full of shit when he claims the league unfairly targets the Steelers. When James Harrison was a Steeler, I called him a thug and a dirtbag for his behavior on the field and off. I've proven time and again that I will rip them when they deserve to be ripped, but you either don't know that or choose to ignore it so you can cover up your weak argument by suggesting all I'm doing is being a fanboy.

That said, there are plenty of posters here who look for any excuse to bash the team or its fans, and that is why you have posters supporting the foolish notion that a player should be fined for a play on which he made no contact with the opposing player.

I'm not attacking you. I'm pointing out the many things wrong with your argument. It is an important distinction, one that sailed over your head just like Timmons sailed OVER Flynn.

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but seeing that more and more, he's leading with a forearm fully intending to deliver a head shot. And, yes, Flynn ducking his head at the last second is the only reason the head shot wasn't delivered.
