There was a fairly significant school board decision in suburban Minneapolis -- Michele Bachmann's home district -- today rescinding a policy that forces "neutrality" from teachers, which most teachers took to mean they have to avoid the topic of homosexuality entirely. The policy was being cited as a contributing factor to a cluster of nine recent suicides within the school district.

Rolling Stone posted an article a few weeks ago that detailed what it's like to be a gay student in that district. Many instances of people being beaten up and called the worst of names in the halls, and teachers walking right on by because they felt prohibited from taking a side when students were ganging up on another and calling him "faggot." Horrifying.

There's always a palpable change when you cross into Maryland from Pennsylvania or West Virginia.

Maryland looks like someone picked up the trash, took the couch off the porch and took down the Christmas lights.

Every state has legalized gay marriage. Only a few make gay marriage official.

You mean a gay man could always legally marry a gay woman?

Can't deny that. You don't even have to look for signs ... you just notice the road is suddenly smoother.

It does seem interesting that at the same time you see some states enacting what would be deemed more liberal laws - you see others that are enacting laws that would be deemed more conservative laws. In short, blue states going navy, red states going maroon.

Which conveniently doesn't require his approval. So he could still have his political cake and eat it too. He can claim to conservatives that he "stood up for traditional definition of marriage and traditional family values" while also saying that he gave the power on this to the people and they made their decision.

It should also be said that if this were put to a referendum, its chances of passing decrease even if polls show a majority support legalizing same-sex marriage. Social conservatives would rally to the cause and money from their interest groups would pour into the state to defeat the measure. Remember that in 2008 Californians voted to ban same-sex marriage in the same election where Obama won their state by nearly 25 points.

As messed up as we all know Congress is, all you have to do is look at California to see tyranny of the majority in action. Civil rights shouldn't be subject to majority approval.

Seriously change the title. All states allow you to get married to whomever or whatever you want. That's why people do it outside at recess all the time. There's a difference b/w getting married and having it made official.
