No, what the people who asked for "sacrifice" wanted was a tax increase. So they could spend it on what, exactly?

Any modest gesture towards fiscal responsibility would be most welcome, especially w/the $
in the sewer, thanks to the Gang in charge . . .

The huge pile of debt we're building in Iraq to the tune of $1.5 billion/week?

A call from the president to donate blood.
A national effort to begin reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
    Asking Americans to drive less.
Reduce the speed limit to 55 mph.
Pass CAFE standards for auto makers.
More tax credits for fuel-efficient vehicles.
    Measures to support American manufacturing.

    Nope. Instead we shop.

Yes. Because we are going to war, we're going to ask you to drive less. That'll fix everything.

Wow! Oversimplification. Just like GWB's Middle-East outlook.

The only sacrifice we were asked to make was to remain very afraid and vote republican.

I'm assuming here....being under a rock since 1991....that the subject of Iraq as a threat only got brought up after 9/11? Am I right?

  7. Then, there's this story, which is almost unimaginably horrible.

    Things are looking up.

    My thoughts:

First, how can anyone say this isn't a civil war? Do we need to build Ft. Sumter on the Tigres so someone can attack it?

We should have killed Sadr years ago when he first started this bullshit.

We stirred all this up, and now I'm not sure how we can stop the cycle. Leaving it won't make it any better. Staying there isn't making it any better. I think we just instigated a cycle that was bound to happen eventually, whether it was now or years from now once the Hussein clan finally left power through death or otherwise.
