If this were my break, I wouldn't be shouting it from the rooftops on a message board such as this. Doesn't make any sense on any level.

Hey, at least he's keeping it professional and all.

    A. I work in a completely different field, now. I have no desire to ever work for another daily newspaper ever again. I was laid off from the only newspaper in town and, since meeting my wife, have no desire to move for another newspaper job.

    B. Because I have no desire to work for another daily newspaper ever again, I don't feel any obligation to be "professional" as though I might jeopardize any future newspaper job opportunities by being "unprofessional". I am happy as a freelance columnist. My editor is happy with my work. It's a very laid back publication and she likely wouldn't give a shit if I "shouted from the rooftops." Should my tenure as a freelance columnist end, I would be just as happy working my day job without the extra responsibility. I enjoy writing and covering sports, but it is not an all-encompassing part of my life and what I do causes me little stress.

    C. Fuck those fucking fucks who gave their employees zero days' notice of their job loss, provided minimal compensation for the employees they were kicking to the street, and treated the laid off employees like criminals, having security escort them out of the building in full view of the newsroom and without an opportunity to collect their personal belongings. Those were shipped to the employees' houses a few days later. So, if I could, I would stick one fucking middle finger in the face of the publisher and the other in the face of the sorry fucking sports editor who threw me under the bus. And then I'd laugh in their fucking faces.

Good for you, and screw your former employers for treating people poorly ... but why would you not care about professionalism when you're doing freelance work? Just because you can't see it directly biting you in the ass? That's flawed logic.

How big of a scoop can this be then?

What I should say is that I care that I am professional in my gathering of news, professional in my writing, and perform my journalistic duties, however few I have, in an ethical manner.

    Outside of that? Meh.

Of course, by beating the newspaper and the TV station on this story, you might end up costing someone else their job.

  8. you started a thread because you reported something first?

    really?

this place gets more pathetic every day

    So you're here because?

Time is precious. Why waste someplace you think is pathetic? Not a knock on you for thinking that, certainly within your rights. I just don't understand why you'd come here.

glad you're excited to get a possible scoop, but your post does come off as somewhat amateurish. As they would say in the booth "Act like you've been there before."

I look at it like it's a football game. The other team disrespected me by calling a timeout in the last two minutes when they were up by 50 points last game. Now, I'm going to run up the score on them the next chance I get and celebrate every touchdown.

Maybe you'd rather I reported another mass layoff. Would that be more or less pathetic?
