I don't understand the title. Why is this 'sad'...I never understood why people referred to these child porn cases as 'sad'...to me they are a case of getting the worst kind of crooks in the world off the streets -- nothing 'sad' about it.

Sad, I think the poster meant, in the sense that it's sad when children are exploited by things like child pornography.
Sad that adults can get gratification from such.

This Babik is like 5-9 and 140 pounds, or used to be when he was the assistant SID at Western Michigan 25 years ago...

What he said. It was my exact intent.
And just to spout a bit here (keeping completely in mind that Mr. Babik has not been found guilty of anything yet). Maybe this stuff has always been happening and we're hearing more about it because there are 24-hour news stations and web sites and blogs. It seems as if the pedophiles got together about 20 years ago and declared war on our children. I'm sure that we've had our best doctors and scientists and psychologists working on what makes these people tick. So far, the only conclusion they've reached is that there is a recidivism rate that is far greater than any other crime. Maybe they can't be helped or rehabilitated. If that's true, they need to be gotten out of our society and kept as far away as possible for as long as possible. If that involves the death penalty, so be it.
I don't see any other answer? Does anyone else?

Considering that everyone who gets busted knows what they are doing is wrong and reckless beyond all belief - it blows my mind they are still able to catch people with this stuff.

It has always happened to some extent. It's just that with the proliferation of the Internet in the last 12-14 years, it's much easier to get hold of and distribute the stuff these days.

How chickenshit is it that a story of this magnitude is a "staff report"

I had never heard that story (not saying it isn't true) but the timing does match up between when Ross left and Foley's divorce.
