Evidently, Gizmodo got a hold of the new iPhone due out in the summer.

Part of me thinks it's a clever scheme by Apple to gain publicity. Not sure though. If someone truly misplaced the gadget, does Apple have any legal recourse against Gizmodo?

Jobs might be unhappy. But that new iPhone makes me very happy. Want!

I can see Nick Denton's erection from here.

I'm with rumple ... this could very well be a leak job by Apple. If not, I hope Jobs doesn't fire/kill the guy over this.

And there's more: Apparently, Gizmodo bought the phone for $5,000.

Do people upgrade whenever a new phone comes out?

I don't believe for a second that Apple had nothing to do with this "leak"

The free publicity is worth millions.

I know Apple spends a fortune on advertising, but that place gets better product placement than any company I've ever seen.

I still put them second for that. Krispy Kreme of the late 1990s, early 2000s. Never advertised, but word of mouth and then papers/tv/radio would report breathlessly on the NEW DONUT SHOP coming to town, so there'd be a two-hour wait on opening day to buy a damned glaze donut. It was weird. But delicious.

I had never heard of Krispy Kreme until it came out during the 1992 election that Bill Clinton was a fan. I think he may have had meetings with reporters there during the primaries in New Hampshire or something like that.

If this was all a leak by Apple, it's brilliant. They've just spent months endlessly hyping the iPad and why it's THE DEVICE YOU MUST HAVE. And the next round of iPods is probably due out in September.

So how do you start building the buzz for the next iPhone without burning out the public? By making it look like somebody else is doing the heavy lifting for you.

Apple doesn't do intentional leaks or, at least, it hasn't in the past. I'm inclined to think this wasn't a scheme.
