U-T San Diego buying North County Times, or maybe not

I don't understand why so many newspaper employees are still "nervous" about such things. It's time for people to become excited about the next chapter in life. When everyone who has left the newspaper business is happier at their new careers, people still in newspapers should take the message. It's always tough to leave a job you hold onto, but layoffs is what starts turning the wheel for people to get into new careers. I'm still extremely thankful for my layoff every day.

Yes, it's really exciting to worry about losing the thing that keeps the roof over your head, the food on the table.

My finances are fucked! How exciting!

Lots of Lee employees wishing Buffett would just buy their whole damn chain right about now.

    I sure wouldn't be complaining.

I think what he's saying, and I wholeheartedly agree, is that after six years of this nobody can possibly say they're surprised by the outcome, and everybody should have found an exit strategy. If you can't see yourself doing anything else, that's OK, but there's really no room for complaint anymore. This is the way it is, has been and will be.

The part I bolded, that's about as truthful as it gets. An excellent summation.

Best of luck to my soon-to-be ex-Lee bretheren and sistheren at the NC Times, and still appreciate your help when we had a team head south for regionals. [/selfouting]

Does this mean Lee is in a selling mode, though? HR functions for the Cali papers were out of Escondido.

    Agree on all points.

The grass is often much greener. But for many, it takes the jolt of being pushed out to truly have the opportunity to pursue a better life.

I'm at a Lee paper in California, and am interested to see how this might affect us. For one, I wonder how closely Lee might listen if one of our competitors offer to buy our paper. Also, the NCT's HR person, Peggy Chapman, took over responsibility for our paper a few years ago, and she is one of the better HR people I've dealt with. I wonder what her situation is now.

Agreed. Peggy rocks. Responds quicker to my questions than when we had an in-house HR person.
