It's funny. Almost every role since Happy Days he has played a nervous nebbish.

    Ben Stiller has three characters:

    1. Well-meaning wimp/bumbler (Meet the Parents, Night at the Museum, etc.)
    2. Ridiculous type-A personality on steroids (Heavyweights, Dodgeball)
    3. Idiot poseur (Zoolander, Tropic Thunder)

Not many actors even have three. Denzel Washington, as good as he is, is always the over-confident protagonist.

    Nuh-uh! Sometimes he's the over-confident antagonist.

Yep. Tom Hanks, who is considered one of the two or three greatest actors of his generation, has been so gun shy about going against type since "Road to Perdition" that he's played a variation of the same altruistic schlub in every movie.
