I know it's the way of the biz, but to this day it strikes me as odd when a paper buys out a whole bunch of veteran folks and cuts the newsroom size by a pretty healthy percentage and then several weeks later is advertising two openings.

  3. Nothing odd about it. DMN dumped salary in two purges and has made a practice of hiring back on the cheap. If you take this, don't plan on staying long. Get in, put together some clips and get out. Friends there say morale is in the toilet, best desk people have moved on and nobody trusts anybody else.

Pretty classless hiring approach here. Oh, Daily and Sunday circ will be down more than 10 percent when numbers are released on Oct. 30. ::)

It's a shame. This should be one of the better jobs in the business, but obviously, given recent events, it's probably what lone star said.

Nothing says hire back on the cheap more than "three years of professional newspaper experience PREFERRED." In other words, we want people who have not been working long enough to make a lot of money, or some stud out of college who just wants a job and doesn't know any better. Might make sense in the checkbook, but can't be good for morale in any way whatsoever. Maybe, though, they'll surprise us all and hire a couple of veterans who bring home a decent amount cheese . . . maybe . . .

it really sucks when newspapers won't pay for real talent anymore. that leads to big mistakes all over the papers, and no wonder the public trust is woeful.

newspapers used to exist to serve the public. the peeps in the trenches still do, but, sad to say, the suits in the offices have no friggin' idea what that means.

they wouldn't last half a shift on the desk, and they'd be shittin' pants the whole time.

saw this section for the first time in a long while this weekend and i can see why they need the desk help. a couple errors in some college previews and the same h.s. football story ran twice. i know deadline can be a bitch, but this wouldn't have happened 3-4 years ago.

how serious are they about the degree?

What if you're an F-in stud and never finished college?

The mere fact the DMN has to ADVERTISE openings is a big honking red flag.

They usually have had in the past a stack of resumes 4 feet high... with no solicitation whatsoever. They just picked and chose from the f'in studs.
