The rumor a few years ago was that Lee and Gannett were going to do some swapping, somehow with the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) going to Gannett and the Des Moines Register going to Lee. It would have given Lee the largest paper in Iowa (where the company is based) and Gannett a stranglehold on the state of Arizona. But, as it turns out, that was just a rumor.

Man, this thread is beginning to sound like the Chicago Bulls, with all their wheeling and dealing! :)

Hey, if the Tucson/Des Moines trade really happens, maybe Lee can throw in Flagstaff as a "minor league player to be named later." Northern Arizona (and particularly "Flag") is a great place to live, and it's great news town, but the Daily Sun's been gutted so much by Lee, people living there might as well just read the AZ Republic online.

Well, there is no wheeling and dealing. It was just am unsubstantiated rumor based on speculation a few years ago, but it was still an interesting thing to think about, in a "if newspapers were like fantasy baseball" kinda way.
