    I believe the DOJ argument was that the combined LAT/OCR would monopolize all the advertising in the LA/OC region.

    Which would have been a good argument before cable, satellite and the Internet.

    That's a bit of a long read, but a great article recounting the Chicago Tribune's downward spiral since 2000.

    As noted in the link, the Tribune and LA Times were staunchly anti-union for 100-plus years, and crushed any attempts by employees to unionize. It took the ineptitude of Tronc executives to force employees to overcome that history and finally organize in a desperate gambit for survival.
