Tribune is finally rid of Randy Michaels

    The older I get, the more my newspaper pensions look incredibly minuscule. Together they might cover the food bill for a month when I retire, but that's about it. It's certainly no Great Reward for all those years of pressure deadlines, but at least there will be a little supplemental income. If they don't bail on the pensions, that is.

    Most newspapers that have pensions prepare you for how tiny they'll be by getting you used to living on a puny income while you're working. That's their way of helping you deal with the shock of how small the pension checks will be.
