So, what, they just cut off accepting resumes because they've got too many? That's not EOE is it?

  2. No clue, but who can blame them? I mean, 300 resumes in a few days. Hell, if they kept it open a month, they'd need to hire 2-3 more HR people just to sift through the pile.

A friend of mine mentioned to her boss that I'm looking for a job. He told her to get a copy of my resume and he'd take a look at it. She just mentioned me in passing to him (knowing I was looking for a job), so I wasn't even expecting it. Now I feel like I'm completely dumbfounded and stumped on coming up with a cover letter. I'm not even applying for a specific job, so I can't gear it towards those needs. The cat totally has my tongue right now.

Along those lines, KG, a headhunter guy I know says that the best thing you can do is let people know you are looking.

And when I say looking -- I am not talking about looking for a newspaper sports job.

You might let people know you are interesting in a marketing job or PR or communications or technical writer or pizza delivery or whatever.

He also said that you should find the top headhunter in your area in your specialty.

    Good luck with that.

Headhunter? OK, that's a term for someone who seeks potential employees for certain fields. I've heard it before.

If you are in accounting, IT or building safety, I know people.

Accounting is where it's at. But I took one class in college and it was pretty much 101.

In a previous post you said "let people know" you are interested in a X job or Y job. Who are these people? The headhunters? The firm/business? Friends and family?

Well, you need to network. You need to meet people and get out there.

For example, I have met parents at baseball who worked at places I would like to work. I know a couple who are in HR at companies and such.

I let them know I am open to opportunities and such.

(Of course a couple are high ranking folks in big companies that hire lots of people and they've done zilch.)

If you aren't on linkedin, you should be. You can link in with people who are "recruiting specialists" and such and try to pick their brains a bit and let them know who you are.

You need to work it. It is not enough to send in a blind resume.

just landed a second job monday at the local video store. and I think what helped me more than anything was simply having a general relationship with the owners prior to my applying for the job. it was pretty much just emails answering weekly trivia, sometimes a note about a good experience in the store, and casual hellos when they were in the store and we happened to be there.

so when the opening was announced, I emailed and let them know I was interested. asked about the job a little, what the hours were ... basic stuff, but it was stuff that a lot of other applicants probably hadn't done. so my name was right there in their memory as they went through apps.

I'm kind of blathering now, I guess, but short version is that the personal touch in these things counts.

Owners of the two tennis stores I frequent know me pretty well. Next time I stop by it will probably be as a job seeker.

That's why I joined this site. Figure I can network with you guys and gals and maybe one of the rich types who hang out here might have a job that needs to be filled.
