OK, you knew it was coming. We have less than two weeks left (mercifully) in 2012, so time to list your top ten NEWS stories of the year. (We'll do a different thread strictly for sports stories).

If the Mayans got it right, that is THE news story of the year. Problem is there is no way to report it.

    OK, mine would be...

    1) Barack Obama defeats Mitt Romney to win re-election as US president

    2) Shooting at Connecticut elementary school

    3) Shooting at Colorado movie theater

    4) Hurricane Sandy devastates New York/New Jersey

    5) Former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky convicted of sex offenses

    6) Ongoing war/chaos in Syria

    7) US embassy in Libya attacked, ambassador killed on 9/11

    8 ) Deal/no deal on "fiscal cliff"

    9) Supreme Court upholds Affordable Health Care Act

    10) Record draught plagues central US

As one former co-worker was fond of saying "Is there any good news in the paper today?"

That's going to be the biggest non-story since Harold Camping missed his prediction in 2011. YAWN!

    What's the big deal?

I think this is pretty low.

That was an enormous, enormous deal at the time. And will continue to be important, to many, many people, for years to come.

It got a lot of media attention and caused public uproar. Yes, I know, I pick up the metro section on most any day and read about the same kind of stuff. Not saying the acts themselves were anything different, just the public reaction. Sort of like comparing the Casey Anthony trial or the OJ Simpson trial to your run-of-the-mill murder trial.

See, I prefer it when your trolling is more outright like that.

This is a pretty good list. I would move Affordable Care Act to 3rd. I would also have Syria and Libya ambassador ahead of Sandusky. Good list overall.

I debated where to put the ACA. In my mind, it was something done in a previous year. I never really thought it was likely to get overturned. If if had gotten overturned, that would have made it a bigger story IMO.

George Zimmerman murdering Trayvon Martin has to be in there somewhere.
