According to Robin Miller: The controversial, ground-breaking, tumultuous 20-year reign of Tony George at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is over. SPEEDtv.com has learned George was voted out of power in a Tuesday night board meeting in Indianapolis.
A source close to the situation confirmed that the 49-year-old grandson of Tony Hulman would no longer be CEO of the Speedway after a vote of the IMS board of directors which includes mother Mari, sisters Josie, Nancy and Kathy, attorney Jack Snyder and George.

Miller goes on to say Humpy Wheeler is among the candidates to take over. No confirmation from IMS at this time.

Updated 6:37 p.m. ET: George still CEO, but told by family-controlled board to focus on the IRL and make it profitable. See later posts on page 2, 3.

Updated 6/30/09: George resigns at Hulman and Co. board meeting, remains on board, will run his Vision Racing team.

Apparently Humpy was in Indy for the 500, stirring up the rumors. I'm not exactly sure how Humpy would work with the history and tradition of IMS...but I'm intrigued by the possibility.

If only they had canned Tony George before he single-handedly destroyed open-wheel racing in America.

I totally agree. He poisoned the well and now Mr. NASCAR himself, Humpy, is going to take over. Indy will never be the same and that'll be a good thing. Nobody promotes a track better than Humpy Wheeler. Even without the suggestive name.
