Good news for our big and tall friends:

Bigger is better for Tim White, a 29-year-old hairstylist.

The Bridgeport resident takes pride in his clothing. But his 52-inch waist makes it no easy task to shop for clothes at a typical men's store.

All but a few of his clothes come from Destination XL, a Canton, Mass.-based retailer that's trying to rebrand itself as a one-stop shop for big and tall men who are interested in upscale, private-label offerings as well as designer togs from Michael Kors, Brooks Brothers, True Religion, Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger.

"DXL is more high-end, and they're just more genuine in the help," White said. "It feels like they really want to help you find what you want."

A new Destination XL shop at 133 E. Chicago Ave. is one of about 60 nationally that will open this year, replacing stores that operated under the Casual Male XL and Rochester Big & Tall names. By the end of 2015, Destination XL Group Inc. hopes to complete its rebranding, with some 225 to 250 U.S. stores operating under the new name.

"This isn't just frumpy clothes and everything in black or gray," said David Levin, president and CEO of Destination XL Group. "We have whatever is happening out there in the regular sizes."

At stake is a market that's equally big: IBISWorld Inc. pegs the market for larger-size men at $3.5 billion annually in the U.S., and growing 6.5 percent per year through 2017. The research firm defines the big and tall men's market as consumers with waist sizes of more than 40 inches or heights of at least 6 feet 2 inches. That equates to about 11 percent of the men's apparel business.

The chain is aiming to home in on men with a waist of 42 inches to 46 inches, shoppers who haven't been well-served by traditional retailers' bricks-and-mortar stores and who also are comfortable with shopping online and through catalogs, Levin said.

At about 8,500 square feet, the DXL shops are about three times bigger than Casual Male shops, allowing them to organize products by lifestyle: active, traditional, modern and young men's. They'll also carry more brands, incorporate larger aisles and fitting rooms, and feature sofas and chairs for watching flat-screen TVs set to sporting events, Levin said. Each store also has a Polo Ralph Lauren shop. Shoes are sized from 10 to 15, in widths to 4E.

Average man is going to be uncomfortable flying long distance:

Boeing says its revamped "777X" will hold 406 people based on economy seats over 17 inches wide and set out 10 in each row.

Airbus says the competing version of its A350 will carry 350 people in 18-inch-wide economy seat laid out 9 abreast.

As diets change, people get bigger but plane seating has not radically changed.

Between the early 1970s, when the Boeing 747 jumbo defined modern long-haul travel, and the turn of the century, the weight of the average American 40- to 49-year-old male increased by 10 percent, according to U.S. Health Department Data.

The waist of the average 21st-century American male is 39.7 inches, according to U.S. health statistics, which equates to a diameter of 12.6 inches. This leaves 2 inches either side in many plane seats, which are narrower than at an average cinema.

Airbus says that is not enough for long-haul travel and says its rival is sticking to a seat concept from the 1950s, when the average girth of the newly christened ‘jet set' was narrower.

Airbus says it has commissioned research suggesting an extra inch in seat width improves sleep quality by 53 percent.

6'4", 290 lb, 46 inch waist. I lived in Casual Male for years, now it is rebranded and more expensive.
Burlington Coat Factory is another good place for bigger sizes, especially cheaper options.
