Army Specialist Zachary Boyd, who is from Texas, recently was sleeping when his post in eastern Afghanistan came under enemy attack. He jumps up, grabs his rifle and gets to his post, wearing pink boxers that say "I Heart New York" and flip flops.

AP photographer David Guttenfelder is there and snaps a picture. Picture runs on the front page of the NYT.



Boyd tells his parents, "I may not have a job anymore after the president has seen me out of uniform.”

Bob Gates says, "Next time I go to Afghanistan, I want to shake Zachary Boyd's hand."

 

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because men in pink boxers stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

 

That is something out of a 1940's service comedy.
And Gates is a real mensch for what he said.

 

I posted this on my facebook yesterday. It takes a real man to fight the Taliban in pink "I (heart) NY" boxers. I love this guy (in a great story kind of way).

 

Saw this when SC posted it. Awesome, awesome story.

 

I'm just sayin', I know there's rules of engagement and all, but if I'm that photographer, I'm gonna think twice before I snap a picture of a guy in his boxers when that guy has a high-powered weapon in his hand. Just sayin' is all.

But yeah. Definite points for Gates for saying what he did.
