Has the world ever been, you know, quiet for just a few weeks in a row? It doesn't seem so in my lifetime. And here we are in today's era: Israel-Hezbollah, Iraq, Iran, North Korea. Darfur. Syria. Bush-Cheney. AIDS in Africa. 11 major fires in California. Did Tom Cruise really father another child? (just kidding on that one). Tsunamis. New Orleans.

Doesn't life ever relax? Can we ever just breathe as a species?

It's probably why I've made it a point to cover A LOT of local baseball the last few weeks. It's a great escape, getting lost in the game. Yes, they're a bunch of 13- and 14- and 15-year-olds, but around here it's not such bad stuff.

Anyway, who's the ad wizard who came up with this current state of the world?

It has always been like this.
But the ubiquitous and rapid exchange of information makes it seem more immediate than it did in the past.

    Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more?

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

    Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, Monopoly

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

    World pollution, there's no solution
    Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

The eastern world, it is exploding
    Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’
You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’

    But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
    Ah, you don’t believe
    We’re on the eve
    of destruction.

Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say
Can’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today?
If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away
There’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave
[Take a look around ya boy, it's bound to scare ya boy]

    And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
    Ah, you don’t believe
    We’re on the eve
    of destruction.

Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’
    I’m sitting here just contemplatin’
I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators don’t pass legislation
And marches alone can’t bring integration
    When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’

    And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
    Ah, you don’t believe
    We’re on the eve
    of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for 4 days in space
But when you return, it’s the same old place
The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace
And… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
    You don’t believe
    We’re on the eve
    Of destruction
Mm, no no, you don’t believe
    We’re on the eve
    of destruction.

As we pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears
Let us all taste the hungers of the poor.
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears:
Hard times, come again no more.

It's a song and a sigh of the weary.
Hard times, hard times, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door.
Hard times, come again no more.

As we seek mirth, and beauty, and music light and gay
There are frail forms fainting at the door.
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say:
Hard times, come again no more.

It's a song and a sigh of the weary.
Hard times, hard times, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door.
Hard times, come again no more.

It's a song that the wind blows across the troubled wave.
It's a cry that is heard along the shore.
It's the words that are whispered beside the lowly grave
When hard times will come again no more.

It's a song and a sigh of the weary.
Hard times, hard times, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door.
Hard times, come again no more.

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
I cant walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I cant walk you out in the morning dew today.

I thought I heard a baby cry this morning,
I thought I heard a baby cry this today.
You didnt hear no baby cry this morning,
You didnt hear no baby cry today.

Where have all the people gone my honey,
Where have all the people gone today.
Theres no need for you to be worrying about all those people,
You never see those people anyway.

I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I thought I heard a young man morn today.
I thought I heard a young man morn this morning,
I cant walk you out in the morning dew today.

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey,
Walk me out in the morning dew today.
Ill walk you out in the morning dew my honey,
I guess it doesnt really matter anyway,
I guess it doesnt matter anyway,
I guess it doesnt matter anyway,
    Guess it doesnt matter anyway.

    There comes a time
When we head a certain call
When the world must come together as one
    There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
    The greatest gift of all

    We can't go on
    Pretneding day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of
    God's great big family
And the truth, you know love is all we need

    We are the world
    We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
    So let's start giving
    There's a choice we're making
    We're saving our own lives
    It's true we'll make a better day
    Just you and me

    Send them your heart
So they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

    We are the world
    We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
    So let's start giving
    There's a choice we're making
    We're saving our own lives
    It's true we'll make a better day
    Just you and me

    When you're down and out
There seems no hope at all
    But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well, let us realize
That a change will only come
When we stand together as one

    We are the world
    We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
    So let's start giving
    There's a choice we're making
    We're saving our own lives
    It's true we'll make a better day
    Just you and me
