    In no particular order

    Michael Jackson
    Obama
    Angelina Jolie
    Michael Jordan
    Oprah
    Queen Elizabeth II
    W
    Tiger Woods
    Yao Ming
    Bono

(I consider the Pope more an office than a person, depending on who it is. John Paul II was instantly recognizable and would make the list. Benedict, not as much)

Is Oprah big in China or India or South America? I don't know, I'm just asking.

I do know leaving Beckham and/or Ronaldo off the list is a mistake. They are global sporting icons. Hell, they have to come to America because it's the only place to get away from the crush of fans.

This is a pretty North-American centric list

For instance, this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashan is wildly popular in China, which puts him in the minds of close to a billion people

Not sure there's a lot of Liza Minelli fans in East and South Asia and, like heavy-electoral vote states, you can't win without those constituencies.

    Pope
    Dalai Llama
    Queen
    Obama
    Bush
    Pele
Usain Bolt (track is big everywhere in the world)
