  1. Central Illinois’ leading newspaper is looking for a strong leader to drive its expanding local sports coverage and bring even more readers into one of the paper’s most-read sections.

You must be able to lead a veteran department to provide comprehensive daily and weekend sports coverage in the paper and online, and work closely and effectively with editors in the photo, online and presentation departments. You’ll also coordinate coverage with editors at sister papers in Decatur, Mattoon, Charleston, DeKalb and Carbondale and help represent the newspaper at community events, including several sponsored by the paper.

You should have strong leadership experience and skills and a history of award-winning sports coverage. Your schedule must be flexible: You’ll work weekday, weekend and night shifts. We have a universal desk, so working within print deadlines while remaining flexible to help continually update our website is essential. You’ll be expected to occasionally cover some sports events and knowledge of editing and pagination processes are crucial.

We offer a competitive starting salary and an excellent benefit package.

We are a tobacco-free campus and pre-employment drug testing is mandatory.

    Regional candidates only.

To apply provide copies of three sports sections from your current newspaper and four writing samples to: Nancy Million, Human Resources Manager, The Pantagraph, P. O. Box 2907, Bloomington, IL 61702-2907.

    E-mail: nmillion@pantagraph.com

    Deadline: November 1, 2006

Rumor is that Bryan Bloodworth is leaving to become the PR director at the new U.S. Cellular Coliseum in downtown Bloomington. I've worked at the Pantagraph for a short time as an intern. It's a first-class operation with a staff of all good guys.

Good luck to Bryan, one of the good guys. Sad to see him go.

Does this mean if you are a smoker you can't be hired by them? Or if you smoke do you not get breaks and even if you do you have to go across the street to smoke?
Just curious, never seen tobacco-free campus on an ad before.

It means you can't smoke in or directly outside the building. Take your cancer sticks to your car and smoke 'em.

Can you still chew your tobacco at your desk?

Central Illinois' leading newspaper? I'd give that title to the PJ Star.
