I'm thinking that I might go my whole life without seeing this--I did watch it on OLN a few weeks ago, though, for 20 minutes or so--and not feel like I missed out on much. But maybe I'm not in the mainstream. Wouldn't be the first time.

I think bull riding and rodeo is out of the mainstream if you're not a Westerner or from Texas. It's definitely not for everybody . . . but man are cowboys hot!

Dunno, only two things really just came to mind:

    1) "Only steers and queers come from Texas, Private Cowboy, and you don't much look like a steer to me so that kinda narrows it down" -Full Metal Jacket
    2) "The only two things from Oklahoma are steers and queers, and I don't see any horns on you boy. -Officer and a Gentleman

I'm neither Western nor Texan, but stock's pretty mainstream where I come from. Riding just seemed natural.

As for the hot part, can't help you there.

Bullriding seems to me to be the short version of NASCAR.

You get the only thing you really wanna see -- the big ass wreck -- inside of eight seconds.

I'd never sit through an entire rodeo on TV or pay to see one in person, but if a PBR event is on TV and I flip to it, I'm there till the end.

It's great. I got no idea about technique or style, but I know that big sumbitch stepping down on you can't feel good. And a horn up the ass, that's gotta be way down the list on ways to spend a pleasant evening.

I think you're wrong on the rodeo "crash" theory. The majority of the crowd wants the rider to stay up for 8 seconds.

And the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is an AMAZING event.

God, I hate that Lee Greenwood song. It's a such a redneck taunt: "At least I know I'M free."

Well, screw you too. Especially when they played it at the Atlanta Olympics for the US Gymnastics team's little celebratory dance.

yeah, "Proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free." Thanks for visiting, now go home.

As for rodeo . . never seen it, would like to. There was a great country/western parody song called "Rodeo" when I was a kid. But I digress.

Love the Houston Livestock Show. My sister competed in that one year. Totally awesome.

The crowd definitely wants to see the rider stay on for 8 seconds, but he's still gotta get off that bull and that can be a crash in and of itself.

I competed with a steer there in 94. My steer won his weight class in my state. We took him to Houston and got waxed BIG TIME. We didn't even place.   :'(

But that's OK, he made a great steak!!! 8)

    Rodeo, by Garth Brooks

His eyes are cold and restless
    His wounds have almost healed
And she'd give half of Texas
Just to change the way he feels
She knows his love's in Tulsa
And she knows he's gonna go
Well, it ain't no woman, flesh and blood
    It's that damned old rodeo.

    (chorus)
    Well, it's bulls and blood
    It's dust and mud
It's the roar of a Sunday crowd
It's the white in his knuckles
    The gold in the buckle
He'll win the next go 'round
    It's boots and chaps
    It's cowboy hats
    It's spurs and latigo
It's the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo.

She does her best to hold him
When his love comes to call
But his need for it controls a man
And her back's against the wall
And it's "So long girl, I'll see you."
When it's time for him to go
You know the woman wants her cowboy
    Like he wants his rodeo

    *chorus*
    It'll drive a cowboy crazy
    It'll drive the man insane
And he'll sell off everything he owns
Just to pay to play her game
And a broken home and some broken bones
Is all he'll have to show
For all the years that he spent chasin'
    This dream they call rodeo.

    *chorus*
    Well, it's bulls and blood
    It's dust and mud
It's the roar of a Sunday crowd
It's the white in his knuckles
    The gold in the buckle
He'll win the next go 'round
    It's boots and chaps
    It's cowboy hats
    It's spurs and latigo
It's the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain
And they call the thing rodeo.
It's the broncs and the blood
It's the steers and the mud
And they call the thing rodeo
