    If I'm understanding your math correctly, to get 4 million subscribers out of 400 writers you'd need each writer to individually drive 10,000 subscriptions, or $700,000 in revenue. That's. . .ambitious.

    Isn’t that what The Athletic JUST tried to do, only to discover it couldn’t sustain anything close to that effort?

    I usually don't like calling out editing mistakes but the NYT taking an Athletic story and turning John Mackey into a TE for the Indianapolis Colts deserves ridicule.

    So they gained 1.7 million subscribers but only cut the loss by $2.6 million?

    That’s less than $2 per subscriber per year. Even the $1-a-month subscribers would account for $12/year. According to my math, that means there’s lots of churn and few are sticking around.

    And, they added advertisements out the wazoo. Churn plus no one really cares about online ads.
