This is why the article is relevant, because he is still held up as some sort of ideal by many Conservatives. As long as he continues to be propped up in that manner, somebody is going to want to argue the point.

What's FDR's current status? Still an icon?

Until Reagan's heirs succeed in dismantling SS and Medicare, as they've been furiously trying since 1935.

What does FDR have to do with Medicare?

He talked about the big buck and the welfare queen with an aw shucks smile. That's how he won the south and the angry white man vote.

Medicare was the follow up to SS. The success and popularity of SS moving into the Sixties allowed the Dems to sell Medicare, against the strenuous objections of the GOP of course.

    Good lord:

Carter won the South in 1976:

Reagan won everywhere in 1980 because Carter was the worst president we'd had up until that time:

The whole South didn't turn "racist" in four years. They didn't abandon Carter for racial reasons.

It was with great forethought that Republicans began fighting to dismantle Medicare in 1935.

They battled to scuttle SS from the day of its adoption in 1935 and railed against the idea of national medical insurance from that moment on (see Reagan's all-time hit album about the evils of socialized medicine in the early 1960s).

And yet, the program has only been expanded.
