I get that you love Oasis, but Liam Gallagher doesn't compare to these voices. When we have a discussion about best guitar rock, Oasis will fit comfortably.

I would tout Gallagher even if I didn't like Oasis.

I am separating band from singer's voice for the purpose of this discussion.

Here is The Turning, which is 15 years after Oasis' first album:

    Still a gripping, powerful voice.

Gallagher idolizes everything Lennon was about and fashioned much of his vocal stylings after him.

This is Gallagher in 2008 on the album Dig Out Your Soul (very good record): http://youtu.be/EQJkehkRIao?t=12m29s

Here is Lennon years after The Beatles with #9 Dream:

Whether we agree or disagree, is there really *that* much of a difference vocally?

Yes. John Lennon's voice is beautiful. Liam Gallagher's is angsty.

I once started a best voices thread a while back. I think Freddie mercury, Elvis, Roy Orbison, George michael,Janis joplin, Sarah McLaughlin are all part of the discussion. Personally, I can't stand plant's voice and never got into zeppelin because of it. Save Lennon and McCartney for a song writers list.

Apparently this is now a thread about great rock voices.

    Tom Waits

And my serious entry would be Jon Anderson. I wasn't a huge Yes fan at all but his solo stuff is pretty damn good.

If you're surprised by that development at all ... :)

I saw it had 30-odd posts this morning and I already knew what 35 of them would be about.

You guessed Chris Cornell's voice instead of Nirvana's legacy?

Freddie Mercury had the all-time voice, IMO.
Robert Plant is a pretty strong second, though.

More like there were songs McCartney sang on because John didn't have the range that Paul did. Like the middle eight in "A Hard Day's Night."

We've done this before. I agree on Freddie Mercury. I hate Robert Plant's voice, ruins all of Zepplin for me. Other great voices, even though I'm not a huge fan of their music: Elvis, Jim Morrison & George Michael.
