I just saw a TV ad for french fries. The song Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen was playing throughout.

Are there no classic rock groups that hold themselves or their songs sacred anymore? Is any and every song for sale?

I remember a Cadillac ad featuring Led Zeppelin.

I'm sure there are others that turn my stomach.

What are some of your memorable sellouts?

The Rolling Stones, "Start Me Up" for Winblows, I think.

Ah, yes, a classic. I remember that one, too.

    That's mine, too ...

Although the U2 ipod song was quite disappointing as well. I always thought U2 was above that stuff.

Nike using "Revolution" in a commercial
BMW (I think it was BMW) using "London Calling" in a commercial
Apple using a U2 song in a commercial
Michelob Light using Eric Clapton's "After Midnight"

Not sure if any songs were used in ads, but still ...

MxPx did a Pepsi commercial during the Super Bowl a few years ago. Not that many people on this board would know of them and/or the commercial. But it was seen as a big sellout move in the punk community.

Well ... if we're going that route:

We've long crossed this particular Rubicon.
My favorite: the Buzzcocks' "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" in an AARP ad with late 50somethings playing with the grandkids (hey, Pete Shelley would be about eligible if he were American). Now there's one of the last bands I'd have ever expected to wind up in a commercial.

Nothing on there was as awful as "Without You," which I saw on the Classic last night. It still makes me shudder.

  12. Hold your group together with Rotosound strings.
