    I'd read the book first and then rent the movie or Netflix it. The book gives a lot more background, even if you avoid Lewis' ruminations on the evolution of the left tackle in the NFL. Oher is classified as being intelligent, but he never was taught how to actually learn. So the knowledge was there, but the ability to apply it never developed because of his educational and home background.

    When you don't know where your next meal is coming from or where you'll sleep that night, homework kind of takes a back seat. Can't blame the kid for not being "book smart." But anybody who survives what he's gone through is 1. smart and 2. a tough kid.
