Stupid AP, round No. 1,583

Why does AP insist on focusing on the losing team in its NFL preseason stories? I know exhibition games are meaningless, but do we really need three-fourths of the Jets-Bucs gamer spent on Chad Pennington?

(That said, a separate or optional on Chad Pennington would be good reading, but we don't need it all on the initial gamer)

Nobody cares who wins preseason games. I can't support the notion that AP needs to focus on the winner.

I'm just going to treat this as an NFL exhibition running thread.

So Mike Ditka is having the game of his life -- cognizant, timely points and no ridiculous blathering.

Now they are nearing halftime, and he's losing his voice.

I can't support AP going with the winner of a preseason game, either.
I'm ok they "featurize" their gamers. Does the winner matter? It seems an issue story is what papers should be running, not results.

Having a bunch of Pennington stuff is fine ... if you're writing solely for New York or West Virginia.

Fuck you, DyePack! I can't even watch the Bears here. I got the Pats vs. the Falcons.

If you wanted to see good football, you're not missing anything.

Unless the Bears TD was exciting. I was on the can.

I disagree. If your NFL coverage is myopic and singularly focused, I can see your beef. But, no one, and I mean no one, is going to remember the result of the Jets/Bucs preseason game in a month. But, the progression (or lack-there-of) of a prominent national athlete is an important story.

Chad Pennington is a prominent national athlete? Be serious for a minute.

Other than being the starting QB for the East Rutherford Jets (when he's healthy), what is there that puts him on the same level as Peyton Manning, Brett Favre or Ben Roethlisberger in terms of deserving the public spotlight more than the home team? I'd put the trio I just named, Matt Hasselbeck, Steve McNair and many other NFL players --- including several that are retired, like Doug Flutie --- ahead of Pennington on that list. For that matter, Pennington isn't even the most prominent QB in his hometown (that'd be, well, that Manning guy), nor is he the most prominent QB in the area he plays football (that'd be, well, the other Manning guy).

Outside of the New York metro area, eastern Tennessee and West Virginia, the progress of Chad Pennington is the third or fourth item in the NFL roundup.

All the guys you just mentioned...
NONE played in that game. But, thanks for your rundown.
The original point that was made, was lost. In that game, his status was worth telling instead of who broke a 3rd-quarter touchdown. That's the point.

This Bears game is comedy gold. Devin Hester is the real deal as a return specialist, at least against whoever's out on the field for the Niners right now.

Ditka got his voice back. Then they went to this "Ask Ditka" gimmick, and I was hoping someone would razz him off.

Somehow they got him going about the time he threw gum at the 49ers fan.
