No, they weren't. At least not if the reports are correct that the move would've enabled LA to also bring in Howard alongside Paul. The Lakers were on the verge of bouncing right back to the land of championships behind a rejuvenated Paul/Howard/Kobe supertrio--which would have set afire the hair of the league's 25 or so non-major market owners like nothing else imaginable.

The Lakers were giving up two of their three best players for Paul. They weren't getting Howard.
