My apologies. In my defense, I was pretty drunk. :)

I'm with Piotr. I'm a Trekker of the highest order. In fact, when it comes to Star Trek, I'm a little like Mikey is when it comes to Saved By The Bell.

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, even though I haven't really liked very many of the previous big-screen attempts, and even though I have liked all of the ensuing Star Trek television shows better than the original series.

I'm not a Trekker myself, but my dad and my brother are. I'm going to a matinee tomorrow (most likely). My expectations for this are lower than for Wolverine, mostly because I'm not a massive fun. It looks like it'll be fun.

    Thanks, WriteThinking.

That's where Ace had it wrong: I wasn't looking to get ripped, I was on a fishing expedition for my fellow Trekkies (Trekker, whatever. It's just a word).

I have been watching my DVDs of the old-school films (the local TV station is showing the old show every night now), enjoying the glorious cheese that they are. And I remember the idiots who used to rip me as a kid for liking Star Trek and Star Wars and such. They thought the likes of "Disorderlies" was a much "cooler" movie than something where big ships blow up.

Now, well . . . it seems a couple people might be going to see this movie. As well as all those comic book movies that just keep coming out. Screw those jerks! Nerd Culture rules!

    Frackin' Meanypantses.

Shameless promotion of a Star Trek-related news video on a site I used to work for:

    I JUST SAW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't even know it was playing tonight and the discovery had me slamming out the door of the house the second my husband walked it.

No spoilers here. Allow me to say I liked it, more than I thought I might. The characters were faithfully rendered -- which I think might be the most important thing to me. I know those characters, and like them better, than some of my relatives.

The story was good. It was funny, irreverent even, with lines lifted wholesale from the series.. and one or two from a previous movie. It was beautifully filmed; I think it's the first Trek movie really filmed as a blockbuster in terms of the computer graphics and how it looked. Good action flick.

Oh, and 78 year old Leonard Nimoy does NOT look good.

Look forward to discussing it after everyone else has seen it.

Oh yeah, Star Trek is back, baby.

This actually looks good. Of course, I see about one movie a year, so I'll probably catch it on video about 2012.

I dug the original but never watched an episode of any of the TV shows that followed it.

I made a Ponn Farr (sp?) reference in the office tonight. How many geek cred points is that, Piotr?

Haven't seen it yet -- I'm gonna wait a few days for the real geeks to clear out first, and catch a matinee next week.

Curiously, although many people are making the comparisons to "Batman Begins" and the newest revamp of James Bond, the nearest comparison to this revamp/reboot approach was "Superman Returns," which, like this incarnation of Star Trek, attempted to have it both ways -- creatively restart the series, but still retain (at least some) of the previous movies as "indirect canon."

While "Batman Begins" was a smash and "Casino Royale" a pretty big hit, "Superman Returns" is now regarded as a near-bomb -- I think I'd have gone with "Batman Begins" as my template, and pretty much just started fresh.

Hmm . . .in what context did you make the reference to the Vulcan mating cycle?

Starman: absolutely correct. THAT is my problem with this movie (albeit before seeing it). I don't think it's a spoiler to say that Nimoy isn't playing a relative of his classic character.

I wish they would have taken a Star Trek reboot all the way. Don't throw in Nimoy so the geeks give it automatic credibility. Just start fresh.

I went to a 10 o'clock showing tonight, and I went in with reservations. But I was pleasently surprised at almost every turn.
It was not a typical star trek movie, but that's not really a bad thing. I mean, all of the TNG movies were basically 2-hour versions of the TV show anyway. But kudos to JJ for putting together a very good movie.
