The paper I work for has used the bland headline for decades, but I feel it's so much wasted space. I've tinkered around with moving it to the side and adding some "featured" games at the top. I wanted to get some feedback on what to about the standing heads. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to use the space? Appreciate any and all feedback.

It depends on a) how much design freedom you have, and b) how much you're willing to upset the applecart. Try a few tweaks to a minimum to start out, and see how the bosses react. Don't jump in and design your dream front all at once.
