We had one in the basement. I called the exterminator, he said, "Did you try opening a window to let him out?" I said I didn't want to let more squirrels in. He said, "You could pay me $300 to open the window for you or you could do it yourself for free." I tried it, it worked. I don't know how you'd shoot one in the attic without risking blowing a hole through your roof.

You might determine the source of their entry, and then put up a screen or other such barrier. Obviously, do so when they are not in the attic.

Can't the local humane society come by and get them out without shooting or poisoning them?

The Humane Society or the ASPCA often will come and set humane traps to rid a house of squirrels or raccoons. The animals are then released in another area.

Buy a 177-caliber air rifle that shoots flat-nosed pellets.

Go in your attic. Sit and wait. Shoot the little fuckers in the eyeball.

The problem then is retrieval without falling through your ceiling. If you do that you are full of fail.

The traps may be a better option. Or hire a frisky kitty and turn it loose up there for a few days.

I think you should get a "Red Ryder carbine-action, two hundred shot Range Model air rifle BB gun with a compass in the stock and a thing which tells time."

Just don't shoot your eye out.

You don't want to miss a squirrel and shoot through your walls though.
