Every verse of "My Hometown" makes me think of the nearby Rustbelt big city that I call my hometown (because nobody every heard of my podunk little suburb).

As I drive around Microville with my son I think of how different it will be for him, because things are bustling here.

When it comes to luck, you make your own. Tonight I got dirt on my hands and I'm building me a home.

Walk tall. Or baby don't walk at all.

Tonight I'm laying in your arms, carving lucky charms, out of these hard luck bones.

When I used to work at a warehouse job, I sang this in my head every day on the way to work:

Early in the morning factory whistle blows
Man rises from bed and puts on his clothes
Man takes his lunch, walks out in the morning light
It's the working, the working, just the working life

    I assume you're referring to Bruce's version

    and not Tom Waits' original

I'm at work right now, so I'm going to need some time to think about this one.

    The times are tough now
    Just getting tougher
    This old world is rough
    It's just getting rougher
    Cover me
    Come on baby cover me
Well I'm looking for a lover who will come on in and cover me

I awoke and I imagined the hard things that pulled us apart
Will never again sir tear us from each other's hearts
I got dressed and to that house I did ride from out on the road I could see its windows shining in light

I walked up the steps and stood on the porch a woman I didn't recognize came and spoke to me through a chained door
I told her my story and who I'd come for
She said "I'm sorry son but no one by that name lives here anymore"

My father's house shines hard and bright it stands like a beacon calling me in the night
Calling and calling so cold and alone
Shining cross this dark highway where our sins lie unatoned

Nothing describes my home life as a kid better than this verse from "Independence Day":

Now I don't know what it always was with us
We chose the words, and yeah, we drew the lines
There was just no way this house could hold the two of us
I guess that we were just too much of the same kind
